Pillar 5: Create Your Impact
Great Writers, Writing Became My Superpower
Anthony McDaniel is a resource developer, community ecosystem builder, and communications strategist whose journey reflects the power of resilience, reinvention, and lifelong learning. Anthony began his journey in the heart of the Los Angeles music industry while studying at USC and CSU Los Angeles (Communications). As a music professional and artist, he collaborated with legendary icons and trailblazers across genres, including Ice-T, Little Richard, Evelyn "Champagne" King, Klymaxx, and Alphonse Mouzon. He later transitioned to corporate leadership and community development. Anthony now equips youth, entrepreneurs, and professionals with practical communication and writing skills that help them discover their voice, influence others, and transform opportunities into lasting success.
In this lesson, Anthony explores the seven Modes of Development—Narration, Exposition, Definition, Description, Comparison, Process Analysis, and Persuasion—and demonstrates how Narrative writing serves its purpose in effective communication. Through the study of narrative writing, including an example from Frederick Douglass, participants learn how great writers engage audiences, communicate ideas with clarity, and inspire action.
Instructor's Prologue
Lesson
Every piece of writing has a purpose. Sometimes you want to tell a story, explain an idea, compare options, describe a situation, or persuade someone to take action. The Modes of Development provide a framework for organizing your thoughts so your message is clear, engaging, and effective.
Great writers don't simply write—they intentionally choose the writing approach that best supports their goal. Whether you're preparing a school assignment, business proposal, grant application, marketing message, or professional email, selecting the right writing mode helps you communicate with greater confidence, influence others, and achieve better results.
